How long does vinyl siding last?

Usually 30 to 40 years, and 60 or more with good care, according to HomeGuide. InterNACHI's life-expectancy chart lists vinyl at about 60 years. Real life varies with sun, climate, installation and how thick the panels are, so two houses on the same Springfield, PA street can age very differently.

Siding installed in the 1980s and 1990s is now in that 30 to 40 year window.

What makes vinyl siding wear out faster?

Sun is the biggest factor: south- and west-facing walls fade, chalk and get brittle first. Heat from grills or sunlight reflected off windows can warp panels. Nails driven too tight stop panels from moving, so they buckle. Thin builder-grade panels crack more easily in cold weather impacts.

HomeGuide notes that climate and sun exposure drive most of the difference in vinyl's lifespan.

Signs your vinyl siding is near the end

  • Cracks or holes on several walls, not just one
  • Panels warped, buckled or pulling loose
  • Fading or chalking that cleaning will not fix
  • Soft spots or stains on the wall inside, suggesting water behind the siding
  • Brittle panels that crack when touched in cold weather

Can I make vinyl siding last longer?

Yes. Wash it about once a year with a garden hose and mild soapy water, keep grills and mulch beds away from the wall, trim shrubs back so the siding dries, and fix loose or cracked panels quickly before water gets behind them. Skip high-pressure washing aimed upward under the laps, which drives water behind the siding.

HomeGuide recommends yearly cleaning with a hose and soapy water.

Vinyl lifespan questions

Does vinyl siding get brittle with age?
It can. Years of sun break down the surface, and older panels crack more easily in cold weather. If panels snap when you press them in winter, replacement is getting close.
Is it worth replacing 30-year-old vinyl that still looks fine?
Not necessarily. If it is sound, tight to the wall and dry behind, it can keep going. Have the walls checked before you decide.
