Fiber Cement Siding Installation in Springfield, PA and Delaware County

Fiber cement looks like painted wood, stands up to Delaware County weather and sits comfortably next to a stone or brick front. It is also heavy, dusty to cut and unforgiving of sloppy installation.

What is fiber cement siding?

Fiber cement siding is a board made from Portland cement, sand, water and wood fibers, pressed into lap planks, shingle panels or vertical panels. It is sold primed for painting or with a factory finish. Fixr credits it with a Class A fire rating and a 50-plus year life with proper maintenance.

James Hardie is the best-known maker; other manufacturers produce it too.

Why choose fiber cement siding installation for a Springfield, PA house?

Choose it when you want a painted-wood look that lasts. On the 1950s houses common in Springfield, PA, fiber cement lines up cleanly with stone and brick, resists impact, rain and snow, and does not melt or warp in summer sun. The trade-offs are higher upfront cost, more weight and repainting every decade or so.

Fixr notes that factory-finished boards hold color longest, while primed boards cost less and are painted after installation.

Is fiber cement harder to install than vinyl?

Yes. Boards are heavy and rigid, long pieces need two people, cutting throws fine dust, so it is done outdoors with dust-controlled saws, and gaps, clearances and fastening follow the manufacturer's instructions closely. Fixr warns that installation mistakes can lead to water damage, rot, mold and pests. That labor is a big part of the price.

Board and batten in fiber cement costs the most to install, according to Fixr, because each heavy piece needs several hands.

How long does fiber cement siding last?

With paint kept up, decades. Fixr says 50-plus years with proper maintenance, HomeGuide lists 50 to 75 years, and InterNACHI's life-expectancy chart puts cementitious siding at 100 years or more. The paint, not the board, sets the maintenance clock: Fixr estimates repainting every 10 to 15 years in moderate climates.
